Port of Broome Enterprise Agreement Negotiations Update

17 Aug 2026

Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA) has been negotiating with Port of Broome stevedoring and maintenance employees and the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) to replace an Enterprise Agreement since October 2025.

Stevedoring and maintenance employees undertook a Protected Action Ballot at the end of June 2026 and in July gained approval from the Fair Work Commission (FWC) to take Protected Industrial Action (PIA).

KPA received notice of work stoppages at KPA’s Terminal 1 and the privately owned multi-user facility Terminal 2, owned and operated by Kimberley Marine Support Base, commencing at 0100 hours on Friday 7 August, continuing through to 0100 hours Saturday 22 August 2026.

On Friday 14 August, KPA were advised that planned work stoppages at Terminal 2 would be lifted from Monday 17 August to Saturday 22 August. Shipping operations in Broome will resume during this period and be serviced at Terminal 2.

KPA is continuing to meet with employees and the MUA and bargain in good faith to resolve the outstanding items in the EA negotiations. The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has been assisting with conciliation.

KPA is working with operators and agents to facilitate trade wherever possible, with cruise vessel operations continuing over the coming week. Arrangements are in place to ensure the safe transfer of passengers, crew and stores, using vessel tenders.

KPA is keeping port users and stakeholders informed directly.
