The original Derby jetty was built in 1885 and replaced in 1964 by the current steel and concrete structure.
The Shire of Derby West Kimberley (SDWK) has held the lease and management agreements for the Port of Derby since 1997, including responsibility of the wharf, boat ramp and surrounding marine areas.
KPA operates under the Port Authorities Act 1999, which governs the vesting of port land and waters, and sets out responsibilities including trade development, infrastructure planning and maintenance, environmental stewardship, and the safe operation of port facilities
From the 1st of July 2026, management of the Port of Derby has transitioned to the Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA). KPA now holds overall responsibility for the Port, including its commercial operation and development.
Under this arrangement, SDWK retains responsibility for community and recreational access within the port precinct, ensuring it continues to serve as an important local asset. KPA and SDWK will work collaboratively to support the ongoing development of the Port precinct to facilitate trade while maintaining sustainable community access and use.
