Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA) has been negotiating with Port of Broome stevedoring and maintenance employees and the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) to replace an Enterprise Agreement since October 2025.
Stevedoring and maintenance employees recently undertook a Protected Action Ballot and have gained approval from the Fair Work Commission to take Protected Industrial Action (PIA).
KPA received notice of work stoppages at KPA’s Terminal 1 and KMSB’s Terminal 2 commencing at 0100 Friday 7 August, continuing through to 0100 Saturday 22 August 2026.
KPA is continuing to meet with employees and the MUA and bargain in good faith to resolve the outstanding items in the EA negotiations. The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has been assisting in mediation with the last meeting held on Wednesday 12 August 2026. An Intractable Bargaining Declaration Hearing with FWC is scheduled for Friday 14 August 2026.
KPA is working with operators and agents to facilitate trade wherever possible, with cruise vessel operations continuing over the coming days. Arrangements are in place to ensure the safe transfer of passengers, crew and stores, using vessel tenders.
